Waimea College is one of the largest secondary schools in the top half of the South Island. Strong role growth had put the school under immense pressure and highlighted the need to have a plan beyond delivering the additional role growth classrooms. Our Joint Venture partnership with Sheppard and Rout Architects prepared a masterplan to unlock the highly complex logistics of creating a future campus that allows the school to keep operating with minimal disruption through each stage of development.
The first two stages of the masterplan are now complete and comprise of 15 new teaching spaces over 2levels. Timber innovation was at the forefront of our design, the use of sustainably harvested, locally grown, Radiata Pine means the building is highly sustainable, particularly in the field of carbon capture. It has been calculated that the new classroom blocks sequester around 280 tons of carbon over a standard steel and concrete equivalent building. This is the equivalent of saving 110,000 typical school drop offs. We believe the buildings demonstrate how we can build more responsibly by supporting local industry as well as being good for the planet, being a powerful educational tool for future generations.
